On 15-16 February 2012, Pharmapack Europe will bring together key
stakeholders from the health industry at the Grande Halle de la Villette,
Paris. For the first time, the challenges of the pharma supply chain will be
included in the many themes covered at this 11th edition of the event.
As Europe’s leading conference and exhibition dedicated to packaging
technologies and delivery systems for medicines, Pharmapack Europe will
innovate in 2012 by holding a technical symposium on tertiary packaging and
temperature-controlled transportation of medicines.
Organised in partnership with Knauf Industries Healthcare, these meetings of
specialists will take place on 15 February 2012 at the exhibition alongside the
conferences in the main lecture theatre. They will bring together medicine
manufacturers, representatives of health authorities and organisations, providers
of packaging solutions and technologies for health product transportation, and
many other stakeholders in the pharmaceutical logistics chain. The profile of
anticipated visitors includes directors, managers and engineers from
pharmaceutical laboratories and biopharmaceutical companies in numerous
fields such as: transportation, distribution, supply chain, materials management,
clinical supply, packaging, quality assurance & quality control, regulatory and
security.
A pragmatic programme to respond to specific problems
This day dedicated to the pharmaceutical cold chain will be based on two
themed sessions: “Regulatory Update and New Challenges” and “Technologies
Update”. Chaired by Jean-Claude Vogler, MD, PharmD, CEO & QP of
INRESA Pharma, the morning session will take a very practical approach to
dealing with the complexities of implementing a pharmaceutical cold chain in
compliance with regulatory requirements, future changes to regulations and the
impact of this on the pharma logistics chain. Through case studies, experts will
look at the issues affecting the delivery of products for clinical trials to emerging
markets and with the validation of isothermal packaging used for the
transportation of chemotherapy drugs to homes.
“These treatments, some of which are particularly sensitive to temperature, are
produced at the hospital but administered in the home, meaning that their
logistical circuit needs to be secured right up to administration in the patient’s
home”, says Vincent Boudy, PharmD, PhD, Associate Professor, Paris
Descartes University, AGEPS-APHP. His presentation will deal with the key
issues in implementing and validating a secure circuit for chemotherapy drugs
for the Home Hospitalisation Department of the Hospitals of Paris public health
organisation. He emphasises: “Isothermal packaging is a solution for
maintaining a preservation temperature of between +2 and +8°C if, and only if,
the conditions of its use are controlled correctly, in particular the temperature
ranges encountered. The presentation given at the conference will present the
different criteria and procedures for validating the performance characteristics
of these types of packaging.”
The second session of the meeting will give the show’s visitors the opportunity
to discover innovative materials that will improve the performance of tertiary
packaging for medicines and health products. There will also be a presentation
of technologies enabling better control of the cold chain. “For an efficient cold
chain, it is important to have technological solutions that enable you to
effectively keep the product within the temperature ranges required for its
preservation. Nonetheless, management of the people involved throughout the
chain is just as important, because regardless of how good a technology’s
performance may be, it is useless if it is not applied under the right conditions”,
says Jean-Claude Vogler. He adds: “Every manufacturer has to face particular
problems because every product is different. The purpose of this symposium is to
enable medicine manufacturers to benefit from exchanging experiences with
various stakeholders from the pharmaceutical distribution chain and discussing
their problems with experts in order to comprehend them better.”
