Novel Technologies in the Blood Plasma Fractionation Industry
Ponente: Dieter Fassnacht, Director of Engineering GTI (Grifols Therapeutics Inc.)
Celebrating its 75th company anniversary Grifols has led the fractionation industry in the development
of unique technical solutions since the 1940s.
This presentation will display unique challenges of the fractionation industry and best practice
solutions implemented in three new facilities the company has constructed in Spain and the US,
including the ISPE 2014 Facility of the Year Award (FOYA) winner in the category Project Execution.
These manufacturing plants demonstrate novel process equipment to minimize human interactions
and clean room space, process advancements like semi-continuous pooling and the world’s largest
batch sizes to increase throughput and efficiencies. Furthermore, pleasant work environments are
provided by optimizing usage of natural light and minimizing sub-freezing production areas.
Additionally, Grifols philosophy in designing purification and filling equipment in-house is demonstrated
to drive innovation, maintain critical knowledge and provide cost effective custom-fit solutions to
